Flowers and shrubs

Color and healthy shrubs are what make a landscape feel cared-for. We plant seasonal color, warm-season for spring and summer, cool-season for fall and winter, and keep shrubs pruned, fed, and shaped, all chosen for the light and soil of each bed and the Georgia year.

What we do

Color, shrubs, and beds

Flowers and shrub care is the difference between a landscape that is merely mowed and one that reads as tended. This is what it covers.

  • Seasonal color rotations

Beds replanted with fresh annuals as the seasons turn: warm-season color for spring and summer, cool-season color for fall and winter. In Georgia that usually means two main changeovers a year, so there is something in bloom for most of it.

  • Shrub care and pruning

Shrubs pruned at the right time and in the right way for each species, shaped, thinned, and kept healthy. Timing matters: prune a spring bloomer at the wrong moment and you cut off a whole season of flowers.

  • Bed maintenance and mulch

Beds weeded, edged, and mulched to hold moisture, suppress weeds, and keep a planting looking finished. Fresh mulch also protects roots through the summer heat and the winter cold.

  • Planting and refreshes

Adding or replacing perennials and shrubs to fill gaps, refresh a tired bed, or extend the bloom through the year, each chosen for the sun, shade, and soil of the spot it goes in.

The color calendar

Color through the Georgia year

Seasonal color in metro Atlanta follows a rhythm of two main rotations. Here is how a year of color and shrub care unfolds.

Spring

Warm-season color goes in

Warm-season annuals such as impatiens, begonias, and salvia go in as the weather warms, and the beds fill with color. Spring-blooming shrubs are shaped after they flower, and fresh mulch goes down.

Summer

Holding through the heat

Summer color is deadheaded, fed, and watered so it holds up through the Georgia heat. Shrubs are trimmed to keep their shape without cutting off the next round of bloom.

Fall

The big changeover

Summer annuals come out and cool-season color, pansies, violas, ornamental cabbage and kale, goes in for a display that carries through winter. Beds are cleaned up and re-mulched.

Winter

Cool-season color and pruning

Cool-season color holds through the mild Georgia winter with light care. It is also the season for the dormant pruning many shrubs need and for planning next year’s beds.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How often do you change the flowers?

In metro Atlanta the norm is two main rotations a year: warm-season annuals planted in spring for spring and summer, and cool-season annuals planted in fall for fall and winter. That keeps color in the beds for most of the year. Some properties add a mid-season refresh; we scope it to your beds and your budget.

What actually blooms well here through the seasons?

For warm weather, impatiens, begonias, salvia, and lantana are reliable Georgia performers; for the cool months, pansies, violas, and ornamental cabbage and kale carry color through winter. The right choice depends on the sun and shade of each bed, which we read when we plan the planting.

Do you prune shrubs, and does timing matter?

Yes, and timing is everything. Many shrubs set their flower buds months ahead, so pruning at the wrong time removes a whole season of bloom. We prune each species at the point in the year that keeps it healthy and flowering, and shape it to fit the space.

Can this be part of my maintenance program?

Yes. Most properties fold flowers and shrub care into their lawn and turf program, so the same crews plant, prune, weed, and mulch on the same schedule that keeps the lawn cut. One crew looks after the whole landscape.
